Mother's Day

Greetings everyone.

This weekend brings one of those seasons when we sometimes make the mistake of assuming the time will bring happiness and bliss for all.  Such days as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, and other greeting card holidays can also at times bring emotions that are less than ideal for some of us.

Please know that this weekend we also celebrate with each of you the lives of the mothers who have gone before us, loved us the best way they knew how, and those mothers who may not be blood-related but filled that role for us.  To the aunts that help the mothers cope, and the god-mothers who took their roles past the title, we celebrate and are thankful for you as well.

With love and support,

The ATWLC

Stop Porn Culture: An International Feminist Anti-Pornography Conference

June 12-13, 2010

Wheelock College, Boston MA

In March 2007, over 500 people gathered at a conference in Boston to help re-ignite a progressive and feminist movement against pornography. Our second national conference will once again bring together activists, academics, researchers, survivors, parents, and other concerned community members to continue developing our anti-pornography analysis and building our resistance movement. Come and join us for two days of keynotes, workshops, and discussion. Speakers include Wendy Maltz, Gail Dines, Rebecca Whisnant, Sharon Cooper, Robert Jensen, and Carolyn West.

Presentation and workshop themes include:

• The pornification of our culture

• Racism in pop culture and pornography

• International organizing

• Porn and capitalism

• Legal strategies against porn

• The sexualization of children

• Compulsive pornography use

• Hooking up: the porn culture on campus

Commerical Thoughts

I received this post on another listserv.  Thought is would raise a worthy dialogue.

I finally found the Kotex commercial that aired last week during Glee. Really? “Racially ambiguous”?? I am not a marketing ploy. I hope you can view it.

The ATWLC leadership team met today to finish our conversations regarding this year's conference and to begin discussions for the 10th Annual Conference in 2011!

We can't believe it's been 10 years already since this conference was birthed out of a hope to connect women from all walks of life.

Feel free to contact atwlc@notes.udayton.edu if you are interested in becoming a member of the leadership team or any one of the sub-committees that will be formed later this summer.

9th Annual Conference Keynote

Rev. Dr. Donna Cox was with us as the keynote for this year's conference.  Dr. Cox spoke about the importance of women balancing between "being" and "doing."

As a conference at a Catholic and Marianist institution, the Christian references with which Dr. Cox referenced (the story of Mary and Martha from the book of Luke in the Bible), anyone could relate to the message Dr. Cox delivered.  She reminded us that women must be mindful to pause and purposely MAKE the time to rest and rejuvenate.

Thanks to Dr. Cox for the reminder and the challenge to balance the draw to "do" with the wisdom to "be."

The 9th Annual Conference

Thank you to all of those who took the time to attend the 9th Annual Annie T. Thornton Women's Leadership Conference.  Our theme this year was "Women, Community, Action and Leadership." We do not take your support of the mission of the conference and your endeavor to gain information lightly.

One of the initiatives that surfaced from the conference was the creation of this listserv/blog.  We will use this sight to pass on information that we consider in line with the concerns, issues, and the celebration of women.

Feel free to join this listserv and respond to posts or submit posts at atwlc@notes.udayton.edu.

We hope that you will consider this listserv and the conference as a whole good company on your journey.

With you in mission,

The ATWLC
